The Organisation
The New Zealand High Commission in Vanuatu is part of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (the Ministry). The Ministry acts in the world to make New Zealanders safer and more prosperous. We do this by building connections with and influencing other countries to advance New Zealand’s interests and project New Zealand values. We provide advice to the Government of New Zealand on the implications for New Zealand of what is happening in the world. The High Commission is part of the Ministry’s Pacific and Development Group (PDG).
The Position
The Policy Adviser and Public Diplomacy officer is responsible for raising the profile of New Zealand’s work in Vanuatu and supporting the High Commission’s foreign policy functions.
As a Policy Adviser, you will contribute to the advancement of New Zealand’s foreign policy interests by supporting post’s engagement with government officials and other local stakeholders. This includes conducting research and analysis on political developments and current events and their relevance for the New Zealand-Vanuatu relationship; preparing reports; attending and reporting on Parliamentary sessions; media monitoring; and assisting with visits.
As Public Diplomacy and Communications officer, you will manage the High Commission’s public diplomacy and outreach efforts: seeking to broaden a New Zealand constituency through increased profile and understanding of New Zealand and our engagement in Vanuatu. This will include generating media and social media content, supporting staff to develop their social media skills, and working with the First Secretary to develop a social media and public diplomacy strategy. You will take a lead role in identifying, planning and organizing public diplomacy initiatives for the High Commission.
Essential Selection Criteria
► Relevant tertiary qualification as a minimum or equivalent work history in a relevant field such as journalism or the public sector
► Experience working in Vanuatu and a good understanding of Vanuatu government, policies, and context
► Political awareness and interest in Vanuatu politics.
► Able to build and maintain strong relationships and work collaboratively internally and externally
► Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
► Ability to work and live in Vanuatu
► Clean history (criminal record) and ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate management clearance.
► Hold a current and clean drivers license
