The Organisation

The Vanuatu Agricultural Research and Technical Centre (VARTC) in Santo is mandated to conduct scientific research and development activities in the fields of agriculture, livestock, forestry and fisheries with the ultimate purpose of using the information to enhance knowledge, development and to improve the livelihood of the citizens of Vanuatu. The Centre was formerly known as the IRHO since pre-independence days in 1980. The VARTC was restructured and established by the Vanuatu Agricultural Research and Technical Centre Act since 2003.

The Position

The VARTC Act provides for a Chief Executive Officer who has administrative oversight over the Centre’s day to day management and who is responsible for the performance of the Centre and policy directions on any matter. The CEO position requires a senior, mature, dedicated and committed person who will be responsible of the administrative and financial operations and management of the Centre and will work closely with its head of section managers, the Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Council.

Essential Selection Criteria

► Must hold a degree from a recognised University or School in Agricultural Sciences, business management, administration or similar

► Must have a strong scientific background

► Must have sound knowledge in accountancy and at least 5 years’ experience in business management

► Ability to write reports

► Ability to lead a team and to establish networking

Desirable Selection Criteria

► Be self-motivated and able to work under pressure

► Have a good command of written and spoken English or French and Bislama (Bi-lingual in English and French would be an advantage)

► Ability to attract additional funding resources for the Centre
